ALL GONE, February 2023

We filled the hollow inside us with the devils in our heads.
We watched their fights.
We listened to what they said.
But then we grew tired of them,
and of our patience.

They pulled to the right
yes, sir, we said.
They pulled to the left
yes, my lord, we said.
We listened to each one carefully,
one by one.

The ones who knew said,
“Give them their due and they’ll leave.”
We pushed; they didn’t go.
We shoved; they didn’t end.
Yes, exactly this is what those who came to us were like.

We filled the pleasant gap inside us with whatever was left in our heads.
We watched their plots.
We hid our feelings.
But then we grew tired of them,
and of the endings.

They pushed us forward
alright, we said.
They pulled us back
fine, we said.
We watched each one carefully,
one by one.

The ones who knew said, “They’ll come back when the time is right.”
We pulled, we tugged
they didn’t return.
Yes, yes, exactly this is how those who left us went.
